Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?
Many things could cause your AC to run but not cool. Try 3 easy fixes before calling your technician: (1) Check the fan setting on your thermostat. Ensure the fan is not set to run constantly, only when the cooling system is engaged. (2) Make sure your HVAC filter and outside AC unit are clean. (3) Check the circuit breaker in your outside unit. If it’s tripped, it’ll keep blowing air without cooling. If the outside circuit breaker trips repeatedly, you should get it checked out by a professional. If none of those work, it could be a refrigerant leak, duct leak or a bad compressor, all of which require an HVAC technician to resolve.
Why does my air conditioning keep going on and off?
AC short cycling can be caused by a few different things. Check the following to troubleshoot. (1) Check your air filter. A dirty filter reduces airflow and leads to multiple problems (including a frozen evaporator coil, one of the causes of short cycling). (2) It could also be a problem related to the location of your thermostat. If the temperature controls are near a particularly hot or cool area (like in direct sunlight or close to an air vent), it can lead to constant on/off cycling. (3) Low refrigerant can also lead to short cycling. Low refrigerant means low pressure, which can trigger a safety shutoff. When off, pressure comes back up, the AC restarts and the cycle repeats. (4) If the cooling system is too large for the home it’s installed in, this can cause it to turn on and off frequently because it cools so quickly. Whatever the cause, an air conditioner frequently turning on and off needs to be addressed. Otherwise, it runs up energy bills, increases your odds of a breakdown and reduces the service life of your equipment. Contact an HVAC professional to resolve.
How long do AC repairs take?
AC repair times vary depending on the severity of the needed repairs. Contact your local HVAC contractor for the most accurate time estimate.
Can I do AC repairs myself?
No, you should not attempt AC unit repairs by yourself. You should always contact a local HVAC consultant to make sure you get the repairs done right. Some repairs require a certified technician to handle refrigerant in compliance with EPA regulations.
